Research on elite athletes, across all sports, show that these athletes all have high self confidence and they are able to maintain this confidence even in the presence of failure. Being self confident does not mean you never doubt yourself or your skills, but it does mean that you believe that you can perform successfully despite these doubts. There are several factors involved in becoming a confident sports player.
Adequate planning, training and preparation. Most sports participants spend most of their time and effort at training, and less time in actually competing. It is important that you build success into your training as when you are completing in a match or game. Confidence comes from knowing that you have planned and prepared as well as you possibly could have.
Focussing on controllable factors. Avoid focussing on uncontrollable factors such as the weather, condition of the pitch or even on your opponents. Confident players focus their attention on their actual playing technique and on their successes.
Control your emotions and self-talk. Emotions such as nervousness or excitement can effect our performance either negatively or positively. Try to focus your thoughts on the things that you are doing well let go and forgive yourself for any errors in performance. Positive self-talk will help you control your emotions.
Remember past success. Boost your confidence by remembering and replaying your past successes in your mind.
Sports participants with a healthy self-esteem and self confidence tend to try harder, persist longer, choose bigger challenges and generally achieve more success.
There are many different techniques for improving your self-esteem and confidence. You can use visualisation, effective goal setting or self-hypnosis to program yourself for success.
Finally, remember that everyone has to fail sometimes. It can teach you things about yourself and show you were you can improve. If you are scared of failing, you will never learn the valuable lessons that can be found in those situations.
